The Women’s U.S. Open: A Week of Top-Tier Golf at Lancaster Country Club

The historic Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania is once again the stage for the prestigious Women’s U.S. Open this week. As we head into the weekend, the big question on everyone's mind is: who will emerge victorious on Sunday?

This week marks the second major event on the LPGA calendar for 2024. The Women’s U.S. Open is back at the renowned Lancaster Country Club, drawing attention to some of the best talents in women’s golf. Let’s take a closer look at the top contenders.

Nelly Korda: The One to Watch

If you’ve been following tour golf, you’ll know just how spectacular Nelly Korda’s game has been recently. The American golfer has triumphed in 6 of her last 7 starts, including wins at the year’s first major, the Chevron Championship, and the Mizuho Americas Open just last weekend.

Korda’s consistent performance elevates her to a league of her own, making her a favorite for this weekend's title. Currently ranked as the world No. 1, Korda is yet to win a U.S. Open, despite this being her 10th attempt. In her pre-tournament press conference, she reflected, “Playing this event as a 14-year-old was when I knew I wanted to pursue golf professionally. Competing on the best courses, for the highest prizes, against top players – there’s nothing better.”

With her current form and competitive spirit, could this be the year Korda claims her US Open trophy?

Rising Star: Rose Zhang

At just 21, Rose Zhang has already made a significant mark in golf. Her accolades include victories in the 2020 U.S. Women’s Amateur, the 2021 U.S. Girls’ Junior, consecutive NCAA Individual Championships in 2022 and 2023, and the 2023 Augusta National Women’s Amateur. She’s now ranked as the world No. 6.

Zhang turned professional on May 26th last year, following 12 amateur victories at Stanford University, surpassing even Tiger Woods' record. She made headlines by winning her debut professional event, a feat last achieved in 1951 by Beverly Hanson. With her recent win at the Cognizant Founders Cup, Zhang is a strong contender for her first major victory this weekend. Reflecting on the event, she said, “The energy around USGA events is unmatched. The venues and the care the USGA provides us are truly special.”

Other Key Contenders

Other notable names aiming for the title this year include Charley Hull, Brooke Henderson, Atthaya Thitikul from Thailand, Ayaka Furue from Japan, and Australia’s Hannah Green, who nearly claimed victory against Korda last weekend.

Lexi Thompson Announces Retirement

Lexi Thompson, one of the most celebrated female golfers, has announced her retirement at the end of this year. Turning professional at 15, Thompson has represented the USA in six Solheim Cups and two Olympic Games. In an emotional Instagram post, she shared, “It’s never easy to say goodbye, but it’s time. I’ll be stepping away from full-time professional golf at the end of 2024.”

Thompson remains the youngest qualifier for the U.S. Women’s Open, having entered at the age of 12 in 2007. How will she perform in her 18th and final tournament this week?
