The PGA Tour Championship 2024: Scottie Scheffler's Dominant Victory

Scottie Scheffler capped off his phenomenal 2024 season with an impressive 7th title, leaving fans at East Lake Golf Club in awe of his performance at the PGA Tour Championship.

Held at the historic East Lake Golf Club, the PGA Tour Championship saw World No.1 Scheffler claim the coveted FedEx Cup in commanding fashion. He led the leaderboard from start to finish, never relinquishing his position throughout the weekend. Scheffler’s dominance on the PGA Tour this season has been remarkable, and his victory at East Lake further cemented his status as one of the sport’s elite.

Throughout the PGA Tour season, players accumulate FedEx Cup points based on their finishes at various tournaments. A win at prestigious events like a major championship or The Players Championship nets 750 FedEx points, while victories at standard PGA Tour events such as the Zurich Classic offer 500 points. These points are critical as they determine the players' starting positions at the PGA Tour Championship, providing a significant advantage.

Heading into the Tour Championship, the top three players on the FedEx Cup standings—Scottie Scheffler, Collin Morikawa, and Hideki Matsuyama—earned starting advantages of 10-under, 8-under, and 7-under par, respectively. The rest of the top 30 players received similar advantages based on their FedEx Cup points, with starting scores ranging from 6-under par downward.

Though starting with a 10-stroke lead is a major advantage, only two players—Dustin Johnson (2020) and Patrick Cantlay (2021)—had previously capitalized on this lead to win the Tour Championship. However, Scheffler's impeccable form ensured he would add his name to that elite group.

Scheffler posted a sensational 20-under-par across the tournament, finishing with a staggering 30-under-par overall. Morikawa, who held onto second place, finished at 26-under-par, while Matsuyama dropped to a T9 finish. Scheffler's flawless play from start to finish ensured that he never lost his lead, earning praise for his consistency and composure under pressure.

Reflecting on his victory, Scheffler said, “It feels really nice. I’ve been leading the points list for a long time, and to come here and start with a lead, it’s nice to play the way I did and finish it off the right way.”

This triumph marks a remarkable year for Scottie Scheffler. After securing an Olympic gold medal in early August, Scheffler kicked off September by winning the PGA Tour Championship. His 7 wins this season, including a major victory, make him the first player to achieve such a feat since Tiger Woods in 2007.

Scheffler's record-breaking season has also translated into historic earnings. With over $60 million in prize money, he has solidified his financial success on the tour. Additionally, his dominance in the Official World Golf Ranking continues, holding onto the No. 1 spot with 825.7 points. Xander Schauffele, who trails far behind with 504.5 points, sits in second place.

With his extraordinary achievements in the 2024 PGA Tour season, Scottie Scheffler has written his name in the history books, delivering a season that will be remembered for years to come.
