Leona Maguire achieved a significant milestone in her golf career by becoming the first Irish woman to win on the Ladies European Tour (LET). Her outstanding performance at the Aramco Team Series held at Centurion Golf Club in Hemel Hempstead showcased her exceptional golf skills and determination.
The Aramco Team Series, a unique event featuring both team and individual competitions, saw Maguire shine in both formats. Nastasia Nadaud’s team triumphed over Georgia Hall’s team after an exhilarating three-hole playoff. Alongside the team event, the individual competition spanned three days, with all 108 players vying for victory.
Maguire set the pace early on, leading the field with a remarkable first-round score of 7-under-par. As the competition progressed, Spain’s Maria Hernandez emerged as a strong contender, finishing round three with an impressive score of 68, putting her at 7-under-par.
Despite facing challenges, including a double bogey on the 6th hole, Maguire displayed resilience and skill. Her birdie on the 12th and bogey on the 16th kept her in contention, but it was her stunning eagle on the par-5 18th hole that secured her dramatic victory.
This win marks a historic moment as Maguire becomes the first Irish woman to claim an LET title. Reflecting on her achievement, she expressed immense pride and gratitude.
“I knew no Irish girl had ever won on the LET before. That putt was for me, that putt was for my family, and that putt was for Ireland. It was a proud moment,” Maguire said.
Currently ranked 32nd in the Rolex World Rankings, Maguire’s victory at the Aramco Team Series adds to her impressive golfing resume, including her participation in the Solheim Cup.
