The Turkish Airlines Open was a mere formality with one round left to play as Denmark’s Thorbjørn Olesen opened up a seven-shot lead thanks to some sublime golf over the first three days.

However it was a slow start to Sunday for the 26-year-old: level-par through 11 holes saw his lead reduced to just the solitary shot as England’s David Horsey found himself six-under after 12 and hot on Olesen’s heels. It’s at times such as these when you find out what a person is made of; and three birdies in the following four holes all but secured the Turkish Airlines Open for the talented Dane – even allowing him to drop a shot on the closing straight.

Having made just three of his last 12 cuts, this triumph was a welcome relief for Thorbjørn Olesen and means it is his third consecutive season with victory on the European Tour.

History was made on the European Tour last week as Francesco Molinari became the first home player to win the Italian Open on two occasions. The Italian fired a closing 65 to beat Ryder Cup star Danny Willett by one in a tense final-day battle.

Molinari – a former Ryder Cup player himself – couldn’t have asked for a better start; an eagle-3 on the first followed by a birdie at the second opened up a quick two-shot advantage over the Englishman. Standing on the 13th tee, Molinari was four ahead and looked destined for victory. We all know how quickly things can change in the game of golf, and it only took two holes for Willett to close the gap to one with four holes to play. Despite some nervy moments from both players over the closing stretch, they both parred the remaining four holes to see Molinari pick up his fourth European Tour victory.

It was a good week for some of Europe’s other Ryder Cup jewels too, as Cabrera-Bello finished T12, Fitzpatrick ended the week in T15, whilst Kaymer, Sullivan and Wood all finished in T20. Finding form at just the right time? Let’s hope so!

You've guessed it. There was another first-time winner on the European Tour last week as Nike Golf Haotong Li claimed the Volvo China Open on home soil. The 20-year-old started the final day two shots back but a flawless closing 64, mixing eight birdies with zero dropped shots, meant a fourth consecutive sub-70 round to claim his maiden victory by three. Overnight leaders Aguilar and Bjerregaard carded rounds of three-under and two-under respectively, but it could have been so much better for Aguilar. Whether it was pressure or just one of those shots, Aguilar will wish he could replay his tee shot on the par-3 16th which found the water 30 yards short of the green, effectively costing him the tournament. Regardless, Li birdied 17 and held his nerve down the last to record an emphatic win, possibly the first of many for this young gun.

Rain and thunderstorms shortened last week's PGA Tour event to 54 holes, with a Monday finish required to settle matters. In the end there was a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard, with Brian Stuard, Jamie Lovemark and Byeong-Hun An all closing out their three rounds on 15-under-par - An and Stuard birding the final hole to tie Lovemark for the lead. So a playoff was the order of play, with the three golfers heading down the par-5 18th in this sudden death format. An was the first golfer to be eliminated after bogeying the first playoff hole, the other two making pars. On the second playoff hole, a beautiful 160-yard approach to two foot by Stuard saw him birdie the hole and claim his first victory on the PGA Tour - a common theme among this week's winners. That's not the only thing that Stuard has in common with other recent winners, as he is the 5th Callaway Staff winner in as many weeks. Surely this is telling you something?

Any avid golf fan knows that things really start to hot up stateside come September as the FedExCup nears its conclusion. It’s when the PGA Tour’s best and most consistent golfers from the past 12 months battle it out across a series of playoff events to win golf’s biggest (monetary) prize.

Let’s get right to business – McIlroy stormed through the field on Monday’s final day to win his first PGA Tour title in 16 months; something which seemed so unlikely four days ago. Rory had a nightmare start to the tournament as he found himself four-over-par through three holes, only to play the following 6 holes in an incredible 19-under-par.

The Northern Irishman started the final round six shots behind tournament leader Paul Casey, but a closing 65 saw him close out the Deutsche Bank Championship two shots clear of the Englishman. This victory comes just a week after reverting back to a Scotty Cameron putter – see below – instead of Nike’s short stick which seemed to be the cause of so many of McIlroy’s recent woes.
